Watercare WWTP

"We used the aerial surveying services for the second time on the same site to document the finalisation of construction of a project stage. Abhijeet from Subsurface detection produced a hi resolution orthophotograph of the site that we had no issue using as a background on the general layouts of the site. The resulting A0 site layout drawing was displayed on site and quickly became a daily tool helping the operators and contractors preparing any works carried out on site – above ground or underground".

New Round-about at junction of Waiuku Rd – Patamohoe Rd

Opus are helping Auckland Transport design and plan for works for a new round-about at this busy intersection and required a quick turn-around of the deliverables.

SSD took up this challenge and within five working days, supplied as-built plans of existing underground services using high-end GPR, EMI, RTK-GPS, Drone and Photogrammetric technologies.

Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant, Auckland

Watercare are planning on upgrading utilities across this plant.

Sub Surface Detection (SSD) provided a comprehensive solution by supplying as-built plans of existing underground services using high-end GPR, EMI, RTK-GPS, Drone and Photogrammetric technologies. We delivered layered PDFs, CAD files, GDB files and orthomosaic imagery of the site.

Bartley Consultants - Centreway Rd, Orewa

The client wanted us to locate services in the carriageway prior to road works.

A team of two GPR/EMI techs and one GPS/GIS tech achieved the survey within a day and we supplied as-built plans of existing underground services. Located services were overlaid on council aerial imagery as per instructions from the client.

NULCA industry training

In June 2017, all members of our GPR and EMI team underwent a rigorous NULCA training on best practices in GPR & EMI technologies. Very proud of all our techs who also took an assessment and successfully passed the course. This gives both, us and our clients the confidence that we are continuously providing the highest quality service possible, enabling SSD to achieve the AS5488 - 2013 Classification of Subsurface Utility Information (SUI) standards.

NULCA conference, Wellington

In May 2017 we attended the first NULCA (National Utility Locating Contractors Association) conference in Wellington. This was a great milestone for our industry here in NZ, and a great turn-out from both, around the country as well as Australia. Great steps moving forward raising the industry standards and creating certified locators.

Auckland International Airport

Jonathan Nistor, Project Manager, Airport Development and Delivery, said “I wanted to pass on my congratulations and positive feedback to your teams survey fieldwork completion on a very difficult airfield operational area.  The project went surprisingly smoothly in between difficulties with weather and stubborn manholes – and no operational issues with stakeholders".

In Feb 2017, SSD was engaged by Envivo to complete underground utility surveying at the Auckland International Airport to help enable the planning stages for their Terminal Development project. Our techs did a great job in a very challenging environment, including liaising with project management to ensure the most efficient techniques and methodology to keep up with project schedules, involving public volume and safety, security,  traffic control, surveying data collection, some extremely challenging man-hole covers, and many night shifts!
Surveying of total 4 months and great results.

Airfield team (ASO): “They were a really good bunch of guys to work with as they knew what needed to be done and had a good plan and I tried to accommodate their needs as best I could.  No issues through the whole project and I would be more than happy to work with them again.  Thanks again, and looking forward to the next stage of field works”.

New design for Auckland International Airport

Watercare Reservoir Concrete Scanning

One of our recent Concrete Scanning surveys was at the Watercare Redoubt Rd Reservoir to aid a Cassidy Construction project. With years of concrete cutting experience and the knowledge of the structure designs of prefabricated products such as Hollowcore, Double Tee, Unispan, Interspan flooring systems and their placements, this gives us a great advantage helping to interpret our hi frequency GPR.

Hunua 4 Section 11 - McConnell Dowell

For design and trench construction of Watercare’s Hunua 4 bulk pipeline along Ranfurly Rd, Epsom, we provided high spec deliverables including 2D drone aerial plan and 3D underground fly-through for our client. A great team effort enabling surveying to schedule and resulted in the detection of multiple unknown targets crossing the carriageway giving MD the opportunity to plan around these issues.

About Us

We are a well established underground utility surveying company and pride ourselves providing a quality service to both our commercial and residential clients. We locate underground utilities and unknown objects to help you with the information you need prior to excavation and project planning. We map these services using GPS and Drone/UAV technology. Any strike to a buried utility carries serious health and safety risk – hitting a buried power or gas line could be disastrous and expensive. Protect the public, yourself, your employees and your assets; get us to mark-up services before you dig.

Sub Surface Detection's specialist technicians have decades of experience within the underground civil contracting field, where it is a priority to know the underground positions of all network services prior to the commencement of any excavation. We use the latest technologies including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) Pipe and Cable Locating. This gives us the advantage of potentially identifying metallic and non-metallic underground services and objects such as, Power, Communications, Gas, Water, Drainage, Septic/Fuel Tanks, Manhole Covers and Grave Sites. We provide a high quality service at very competitive price across Greater Auckland, Waikato, Northland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty.

As buried utilities and services are the veins and lifeblood of the community, any disruption through damage to power, water, gas or communications supply can severely impact homes and could paralyse businesses, and furthermore can cost thousands of dollars to reinstate. We use the most up to date equipment available, giving us the highest probability of locating any hidden underground services and unkowns. We actively perform on-going in-house training for all staff to ensure that we are working at the highest possible industry levels. Our training gives us the specialist edge when it comes to GPR and EMI site surveys. This includes keeping up to date with internationally accepted underground utility detection technologies, standards and procedures.

In addition to marking up underground utilities and services, our in-house GIS consultant can produce high quality, to scale drawings, Drone and GPS surveying for data collection of positions, depth indications to aid any project planning, including 3D images, and 360 degree rotational 3D virtual models. We are very comfortable working alongside your existing site contractors. We can, if required, co-ordinate the use of CCTV drain inspections and/or hydro excavation equipment for potholing confirmation of services or the excavation of targets where machine digging is not suitable.
